Originally run in August, the “International Regatta of the Tre Golfi, Coppa Senatore Andrea Matarazzo” has been modified over time without altering its undisputed charm. The sumptuous style of the 20th Century – when the “Italia” winners were the Fondi Princes, Oderisio de Sangro and his three brothers Ugone, Riccardo and Placido – has never dimmed, but after the war the trophy room was expanded and renovated with the addition of attractive new com-petitive events. The Tre Golfi race became the highlight of the Neapolitan summer, even thought the first edition saw only six entran-ts, with Carlo de Zerbi winning aboard his 8 Meter Miranda III, nick-named “cummò”, (the chest of drawers), as it was made entirely of wood. The start was still during daylight hours, but the course which meandered 135 miles between the three gulfs – Naples, Salerno and Gaeta – was quite demanding. The “Tre Golfi” has withstood the test of time and today it is a highly-esteemed society-sporting event, often remembered with a bit of nostalgia by older members: «Today we have lost the familiar and at times prankish nature of the regatta, when there were no professionals and leisure yachts only. The members joked around, which nowadays would be inadmissible. The time when J Class Astra, 40 metres long, broke her mast and the official bulletin announcement read it was proceeding with oars! And the Gala lunch had a very strict dress code, suits and ties, and only afterwards the crew changed into their sportswear… but you often saw the owner-helmsman still in his blazer up until the departure. Today, many arrive already wearing their oilskins, ready to run out even befo-re the dessert is served». The narrations go on and others anecdotes are worth mentioning, also because the terraces of the Club have seen the greatest names of the aristocracy and international yachting. King Constantine of Greece came to train here in 1960, accompanied by his mother and sister Sophia. When the Queen wanted to watch him sai-ling, Prince Carafa and Beppe Croce had to accompany her on Rondine, the Club’s boat. Juan Carlos, the King of Spain, was a great friend of Constantine’s and it was in the halls of the Club that he star-ted courting his future wife, Sophia.Other spicy anecdotes, handed down from one generation to the next, also explain why the Club has always been strictly reserved for male members.ROLEX CAPRI SAILING WEEKNext >
