Organised by the International Maxi Association, the body sanctioned by World Sailing to represent the Maxi classes, the 2017-18 IMA Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge will – for the first time – comprise five events, the best three of which will count towards the main prize. Five events represents one more than the 2016-17 series, with the addition of the historic Regata dei Tre Golfi (Three Bays Race).
One of Italy’s oldest sailing events, next year’s Regata dei Tre Golfi will be its 64th edition, setting sail on 11th May 2018. Run by the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia (CRV Italia), the format for the Regata dei Tre Golfi begins with a Gala Dinner at the CRV Italia clubhouse in Naples’ Santa Lucia Marina. Folloiwng this dinner, the start takes place at midnight from beneath Naples’ magnificent Castel dell’Ovo. The 150 mile course takes the fleet around islands in the bays of Naples, Salerno and Gaeta before finishing in Capri.
This year for the first time, the Regata dei Tre Golfi doubled as a feeder for Rolex Capri Sailing Week, of which it now forms a part.
Being such a long standing event, much silverware is available and, for example, Maxi crews will be gunning for the Coppa Gustavo d’Andrea, the Regata dei Tre Golfi’s prize for line honours.
